World Tsunami: A Threat That Continues to Lurk Tsunamis, giant waves that arise due to underwater shifts, are one of the deadliest and most frightening natural disasters in the world. This phenomenon is often caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or underwater landslides. In the last decade, we have witnessed several destructive tsunamis, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which killed more than 230,000 people. In Indonesia, which is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the risk of tsunamis is very high. The country experiences more than 100 major earthquakes every year, and many of them have the potential to trigger tsunamis. Research shows that Indonesia’s unique geological conditions, with many tectonic plates colliding with each other, make it a prime target for tsunami threats. Therefore, it is important to understand these risks and invest in efficient monitoring systems. A tsunami early warning system is vital in reducing the impact of this disaster. In Indonesia, BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency) has developed this system with modern technology, including underwater sensors and wave modeling. The community is also involved in training and simulations to increase awareness of how to respond to tsunamis. Education about evacuation tape and safe points is critical to saving lives. The risk of tsunamis is not only faced by Indonesia. Other countries along the Pacific Coast, such as Japan and Chile, must also prepare to face this threat. The 2011 Fukushima tsunami, caused by a powerful earthquake, produced huge waves that crashed onto coasts and damaged nuclear facilities, causing a long-lasting radiation crisis. In the context of climate change, recent research shows that global warming can have an impact on increasing the frequency and intensity of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In addition, the decline in ice cover and changes in underwater moisture systems can trigger seismic activity that triggers tsunamis. Therefore, mitigation and adaptation efforts to climate change are important in reducing the risk of tsunamis in the future. The impact of the tsunami is not only physical but also psychological. Survivors often experience prolonged trauma. A damaged environment full of debris creates its own challenges in the rehabilitation process. Psychosocial support and sustainable infrastructure rebuilding are an integral part of post-disaster recovery. Policy holders must prioritize spatial planning that takes tsunami risk into account, including prohibiting building construction near the coastline and promoting buffer zones. Community independence must also be strengthened through programs that encourage effective disaster preparedness and response. With increasing urbanization, many residents live in tsunami-prone areas. This unplanned development increases community vulnerability. Therefore, the integration of advanced monitoring technology and community-based approaches is necessary to produce better mitigation strategies. Community involvement in the decision-making process will also strengthen commitment to safety and sustainability. In this ever-changing world, tsunami preparedness must be a global priority. International collaboration in mitigation technology research and mapping surveys of tsunami-prone areas are important steps that need to be taken to reduce loss of life and damage. Every small action in increasing community awareness and capacity can save many lives when a tsunami hits.
