Global flooding has become an increasingly serious problem in recent years, highlighting the devastating impacts of climate change, especially in vulnerable regions. It’s not just about heavy rainfall, but also about rising sea levels and melting ice, which exacerbates the risk of flooding in many parts of the world. One of the most affected regions is Southeast Asia, where countries such as Bangladesh and Indonesia often experience annual flooding. According to data from the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), rainfall in Indonesia has increased by 20% in the last decade. This damages infrastructure and threatens the livelihoods of communities dependent on agriculture. With more than 264 million people, the impact of flooding could be enormous, triggering mass migration and increasing poverty. In other parts of the world, especially in Europe and North America, flooding is also increasing with the same seriousness. For example, the floods that hit Germany in 2021 caused economic losses of more than 30 billion euros. This phenomenon shows that no region is truly safe from the impacts of climate change, making the impact of natural disasters a global issue. From an ecological perspective, floods cause damage to local ecosystems. Overflowing rivers carry with them industrial waste and hazardous chemicals, creating serious water quality problems. Many species of fish and flora are disturbed, affecting the balance of the ecosystem. Research shows that reduced biological diversity in vulnerable areas increases vulnerability to future flooding. Solutions to reduce the impact of flooding due to climate change include building green infrastructure, such as tree planting and wetland restoration. This helps absorb water and reduces surface water runoff. Adapting new technologies, such as advanced weather monitoring systems, is also important to provide early warning to communities at risk. In addition, the involvement of local communities in the planning and decision-making process makes a significant contribution to disaster mitigation. Sustainability and public education are also key. Communities need to understand the risks they face and how to manage them.
